The Mellow Mushroom in Orlando, Florida is a fun place to visit. Oh and the food’s good too! When you pull up you’ll see an interesting building. A mushroom with a peace sign tossing a pizza. It’s very cute.

The Mellow Mushroom was originally started by three college kids who wanted a restaurant that offered a unique and eccentric vibe.

Now there’s 100 restaurants in 15 states. Each one a little different. This I’m sure you’ll discover if you decided to visit this unusual restaurant in Orlando.

It’s a nice colorful building with plants and a patio for outdoor seating. The colorfulness doesn’t end on the outside. Walk through the front doors of the Mellow Mushroom and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

The decor is hippie-chic. Colorful walls with cool murals of gypsies, mushrooms and fairies. Painted sayings along the walls. Even a clock with a mushroom on it. The dining area is large and open and has a fun and laid back vibe.

The Mellow Mushroom offers a variety of things to choose from. Their appetizer list is called the munchies. mellow mushroom appitezier

It includes items like tomato bisque soup, hummus, stuffed mushrooms, bruschetta (which comes highly recommended) and dough balls (a mix between garlic knots and bread sticks).

I’ve gone to the Mellow Mushroom in the past and gotten the pretzels they make there. They take the dough they use to make the pizza and they sprinkle it with salt, garlic and Parmesan, or honey and cinnamon sugar.

They form it into pretzel shapes and bake. It takes about 20 minutes to cook so I normally just order some to go so I can enjoy them later. If you want to eat at the restaurant they’re worth the wait!

The Mellow Mushroom also offers salads. Some are made to order and others are already preselected. Like The Brutus which has romaine and Parmesan, olives, grilled portobello, roasted red peppers, Roma tomatoes and feta cheese. Yum!

There’s also hoagies that you can order as a half or a whole. So if you have a smaller appetite you could go with the half and if you’re starving go for the whole. Some sub options include your normal ham and cheese, turkey and cheese and meatball.

And some off the wall including The Tempeh with marinated grilled tempeh (a soy product that holds its texture and flavor a little better than tofu), feta cheese, grilled mushrooms, onions, green peppers and topped with sprouts.

Vegetarians rejoice! It might not sound good to you but it’s really good. You have to try it to believe it.

You can also get a calzone or a pizza. The pizza is normally what my husband Chris and I get when we go to the Mellow Mushroom and what this restaurant is known for. The small is normally enough for both of us if we start with a salad or appetizer.

All the pizzas are reasonably priced. The specialty pizzas ranges in price for a small(10") $9.00-$12.00, medium(14") $13.00-$18.00 and the large (16") $16.00-$23.00.

Or you could just go with a cheese pizza or a make your own for $8.00(small) - $12.00(large). The toppings are always fresh and the pizza crust is soft and fluffy. You could even get just a slice at lunch time for only $2.50.

Last time my husband Chris and I went we got an appetizer, small specialty pizza and a cookie for dessert and spent about $15.00. Plus we went home so full we didn’t even eat dinner!

If you want a half and half specialty pizza you have to make sure the sauce at the base of the pizza is the same. They have four sauce bases including olive oil and garlic, pesto, red sauce and barbeque.

We love the Philosopher’s Pie which has steak (I had half made with tempeh because I don’t eat red meat), portobello mushroom, artichoke heart, kalamata olives, provolone, feta and mozzarella with a oil and garlic base.

The cool thing about Mellow Mushroom is that it offers a variety of things other Orlando Florida restaurants don’t. Like the tempeh (which I obviously love) and tofu.

The tofu comes in a variety of flavors including bbq and pesto. That’s not easy to find and it’s great for the vegetarians in the family.

It’s also a little healthier version of pizza with whole wheat crust and the option to have soy cheese instead of regular. And you can even have it made to suit a Vegan. That’s not something you can find at other pizza restaurants in Orlando Florida.

Plus it caters to everyone else as well. If you’re a carnivore you’ll go home with a happy belly too. It’s a great place to make the whole family happy. Plus it’s fun to walk around and look at the decor. They even have painting on the bathroom doors!

If you’re thirsty you’ll be happy that you decided to visit this restaurant in Orlando. The Mellow Mushroom has a nice variety of beers. Both bottled and draft.

Including a nice variety of IPA’s like Heavy Seas Loose Canon, Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada. And also a nice variety of Ales including Holy Mackerel and Hopsecutioner.

Plus English brown ales, dark ales, Scottish ales and American pale ales. The cool thing is on the drink menu it shows you the amount of alcohol that each beer contains.

So if you want to take it easy you can go for the lower variety and if you’re looking to party well then you know what to drink.

The beers sometimes rotate and are seasonal. You can ask for a sample if you want to try something new. There’s also a full bar at Mellow Mushroom and they have some fun mixed drinks to choose from. Plus they offer drink specials.

Happy hour is from 9pm till close and from 4pm-6pm on Fridays. Plus they have special drinks for $4.20 on the weekends.

When it’s busier the service can be a little slow. Most of the staff are younger college students.

Mainly because this Mellow Mushroom is located near the University of Central Florida.

But the staff is friendly. Just plan on waiting a little longer if it’s busy. Maybe have a beer and enjoy some munchies.

Even if you’re not into the hippie vibe I think everyone in your crew will enjoy this restaurant in Orlando. If you’re looking for a change of pace and some great food check out the Mellow Mushroom!
